This is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Mt. Kilimanjaro, 140 KM North East of the Capital Nairobi. The mountain's highest peaks of Nelion and Batian stand at 5188m and 5199m respectively above sea level. It was initially perceived to be the home of God by the local people and forms one of the main water catchments areas in the region.
Wildlife
The animal species found here include black rhino Elephants, buffalo. Monkeys, giant forest hog, rare and elusive bongo and Sunni Buck. The location also has numerous bird species that include Red-fronted Parrots
Plant Life
Numerous plant species colonize the region here. The vegetation here is comprised of rain forest, bamboo, open woodland, scrub and moorland.
More than 850 plant species have been recorded in the region.
